How can I get my TV to respond to commands from my Acer Iconia A500 Tablet connected by HDMI?

When I connect tablet to TV with proper HDMI cable, I get a beautiful picture of the home screen of the tablet showing on the television. That's great. BUT I cannot navigate using the usual tapping of icons on the tablet homescreen. Can I correct this somehow?
